A balcony solar system is a compact solar power solution designed for apartments, balconies, terraces, gardens, garages and other small spaces. It allows households to generate part of their own electricity without installing a large traditional rooftop solar system.

A typical balcony solar system includes:

One or more solar panels
A microinverter
Mounting brackets
Solar connection cables
An AC power cable
An optional energy-storage battery
An optional smart meter or smart plug
A mobile application for monitoring production and energy use

The basic idea is simple: the solar panels collect sunlight and produce electricity. The microinverter converts this electricity into the same type of electricity used by household appliances. In plug-in systems, the microinverter can then be connected to a suitable household wall socket, allowing solar electricity to enter the home’s electrical circuit.

Plug-in solar systems are designed to make small-scale solar generation easier and more accessible.

 

How does plug-in grid connection work?

For the microinverter's AC power cord is connected to a suitable household wall outlet.

After completing the installation of solar panels, cable connections, equipment configuration, solar power can be connected to the home's electrical circuit.

Then, home appliances will automatically prioritize using the currently available solar power.

For example, suppose the balcony solar system is currently generating 600 watts of power, while the home appliances are consuming a total of 900 watts:

Approximately 600 watts can be supplied by the balcony solar system.

The remaining 300 watts are automatically supplemented by the public grid.

As another example, if the home is currently consuming only 200 watts, and the solar system is generating 600 watts, then the first 200 watts can be directly used by the home appliances.

What happens to the remaining 400 watts depends on the system design, battery storage configuration, smart control settings, and local grid regulations. This surplus power may be stored in batteries, its output limited by the inverter, or fed into the public grid.

Solar power isn't limited to the room where the outlet is located.

As long as other appliances in the home are connected to the same electrical system, solar power can offset the electricity these appliances draw from the public grid.

Therefore, a balcony solar system can help provide some power to the following devices:

Refrigerator
Wi-Fi router
Computer
TV
Lighting
Washing machine
Dishwasher
Air conditioner
Kitchen appliances
Chargers and other standby devices

However, this doesn't mean a small balcony solar system can completely power all household appliances independently.

For example, an 800-watt microinverter cannot independently power a 2000-watt electric kettle.

In this case, the balcony solar system can provide some of the available power, while the shortfall is automatically supplemented by the public grid.

Under normal circumstances, users don't need to manually switch power. The household can use appliances as usual, while the balcony solar system reduces the amount of electricity purchased from the electricity supplier.


What Is an Energy-Storage Battery?

A storage battery saves solar electricity that is not immediately needed.

Without a battery, solar electricity is most useful while the sun is shining. If nobody is at home during the day, part of the available solar energy may not be used directly by household appliances.

With a compatible battery, excess solar electricity can be stored and used later, such as:

During cloudy periods
During times of higher household consumption
During expensive electricity-price periods, where time-of-use pricing is available

A battery system usually contains more than battery cells. It may also include:

A battery-management system
Temperature monitoring
Overvoltage and overcurrent protection
Charge and discharge control
Communication with the microinverter
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity
A mobile monitoring application
An integrated inverter in some products
Optional emergency-power outlets

The battery-management system monitors the battery’s condition and helps keep charging and discharging within safe operating limits.
